The easiest place to see the difference between RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QSX is not the rack. It is the wall next to the primary suite door in a Greenwich estate. If that keypad is expected to disappear into the millwork, call the shades, bring the cove down without flicker, warm the art lights, and leave a night path to the bath, the platform decision was made long before the faceplate went on.
Cave Group specifies both systems regularly, and the split is usually cleaner than people think. RadioRA 3 is the better answer when the house wants real whole-home lighting control with minimal disturbance to finished walls. HomeWorks QSX is the better answer when lighting is being treated as part of the architecture itself: more load types, more finish discipline, more shade options, more room for the house to change over time.[1][2]
The Decision Usually Starts With the Lighting Plan
People often frame this as entry tier versus flagship tier. That misses the point. The real questions are about topology: how many loads, what kinds of loads, how much of the house is already finished, whether the design team wants Sunnata RF in decorator openings or Palladiom and Alisse as part of the finish package, and whether this project is likely to ask for Ketra, DALI, wired shades, or centralized panels later.[1][2]

Those scale numbers are not brochure bragging. They change how you circuit a house. A 6,500-square-foot residence with a pool pavilion, layered exterior lighting, and a second phase of work can outgrow a retrofit-first mindset faster than its square footage suggests. A larger house with conservative load types and modest finish expectations can still live comfortably on RadioRA 3. The wrong comparison is room count alone.
RadioRA 3 When Finished Walls Matter
RadioRA 3 starts with a very strong argument in an occupied house. The RR-PROC3-CW and RR-PROC3-KIT processors let us build a real system without opening every wall in the estate. If the plan is to keep existing line-voltage dimming local, upgrade key rooms, add Sivoia QS Triathlon shades, and give the homeowner better scenes, schedules, and control points, RadioRA 3 is usually the cleanest construction path.
That matters because renovation scope is rarely limited to lighting. In a Greenwich house that is also getting a Crestron CP4-R, a few TSW-1080 touchpanels, Sonance architectural audio, and a network refresh, the lighting system that asks for less demolition often wins. RadioRA 3 is not a compromise when the design intent fits the platform. It is a deliberate wireless system.
There is also a behavioral reason RadioRA 3 works well in renovation. It keeps the wall language familiar. Sunnata keypads are wireless, fit standard designer-style openings, and give you field-swappable buttons with a clean light-bar interface.[2] When the job is about making the house calmer and more usable, not about rethinking every closet and equipment space, that restraint is a virtue.
Where RadioRA 3 Stops Being Elegant
When the reflected ceiling plan starts filling with mixed load types, the case changes. Residential Systems noted on July 8, 2026 that integrated LED fixtures, tape light, track lighting, and outdoor loads are making residential dimming jobs more complex, not less.[7] RadioRA 3 can handle a lot of real work, including 0-10V and Lumaris, but once the house starts stacking specialty loads and future phases, we would rather choose the platform that was built for that conversation from day one.
One useful example is Lumaris. In RadioRA 3, adding Lumaris exposes Day/Night Mode. In HomeWorks QSX, the same family can participate in Natural Show programming, which starts to move the project from scene control into designed light behavior.[8] That is a small line item on paper and a very different conversation in a finished room.
HomeWorks QSX Is Less About Size Than Ambition
The project does not need to be a 30,000-square-foot trophy house for QSX to make sense. We reach for HomeWorks earlier whenever the lighting brief is ambitious. A QSX system can scale to 10,000 zones and 50,000 square feet, but the more important distinction is that it adds panelized lighting and motor modules, DALI, HomeWorks Digital, Ketra, wired and wireless keypads, and wired or wireless shades.[1]
QSX also separates itself on control placement. Because the system supports wired and wireless keypads, we can put the beautiful control where the designer wants it and the dimming hardware where the electrical plan wants it. That sounds minor until you are staring at a slab stone wall, a narrow jamb, or a run of millwork where one bad decision ruins both the look and the serviceability.
A HomeWorks layout might start with HQP7-2 or HQP7-RF-2 processors, then fan out into panelized loads, wired shades, and room-by-room scene logic that feels simple to the homeowner because the complexity has been handled upstream. That is the real value of the platform. The house can get more sophisticated without the interface getting busier.
2026 Moved the Lighting Conversation
Lutron has spent 2026 pushing the market beyond basic scene control. On February 3, 2026, it introduced Intelligent Lighting at ISE with Ketra and Orluna product families, describing a phased rollout from February 2026 and emphasizing individually addressable fixtures with wireless control rather than traditional control-wire assumptions.[3] On June 2, 2026, it brought the same idea to WOW!house 2026, using Ketra and Orluna CCX in full-room installations where the light changed character between task, daytime, and evening settings.[5]
That matters to a QSX versus RadioRA 3 decision because it tells you where the residential lighting market is heading. If the design team is already talking about art light, tuned white, circadian scheduling, or layered scenes that behave differently at breakfast than they do after dinner, we do not try to force that brief into a retrofit-first platform. QSX is the safer bet when the home is likely to want Ketra or broader intelligent-lighting tools during this build or the next one.[1][3][5]
The Finish Schedule Is Not Decoration
Keypads decide more projects than people admit. Lutron's current control lineup puts the gap in plain view: Sunnata keypads are available in 24 colors, while Palladiom keypads extend into polymer, metal, and glass finishes, and Alisse adds hand-finished solid brass options on the HomeWorks side.[2] Lutron reinforced that emphasis on premium hardware on February 3, 2026, when it acquired Tanury after a 25-plus-year supplier relationship, specifically pointing to expanded metal-finishing capability and faster delivery of metal-finished products.[4]
So if the interior schedule is already calling for metal hardware, matched trim, and engraved controls that are supposed to read like part of the architecture, we start with HomeWorks QSX. If the controls just need to look clean in standard openings and the house does not want the added finish depth, RadioRA 3 stays in the conversation.
The App Is the Wrong Tie-Breaker
Both systems give the homeowner a good app, scheduling, scene control, cloud backup, version history, and remote service.[1] That means the app is a bad decision tool. If the conversation gets stuck on whether the homeowner can press a scene from a phone, the important work has already gone blurry.
What decides long-term satisfaction is whether the system architecture matches the house. A beautiful Palladiom keypad tied to the wrong load strategy is still wrong. A perfectly good Sunnata RF keypad on a thoughtful RadioRA 3 renovation is better than a forced HomeWorks spec that the construction scope never supported.
Shades and Specialty Loads Settle the Argument Fast
The lighting platform is usually decided by shades and specialty loads, not by downlights. Recent Lutron coverage has leaned hard into layered daylight control. In a June 4, 2026 interview with CE Pro, Lutron described luxury projects moving beyond a single roller shade toward combinations like blackout shades with sheer drapery and other layered treatments.[6] That tracks with what we see in the field. Once the window schedule gets more demanding, control platform questions stop being abstract.
When RadioRA 3 Is Enough
RadioRA 3 is enough when the shade plan stays in the wireless families and the load schedule is still recognizably residential: recessed LED, decorative fixtures, a manageable amount of 0-10V, a few exterior circuits, and maybe Lumaris in millwork or coves. If the house wants strong everyday scenes, reliable keypad control, scheduling, and a good app experience without turning the electrical plan upside down, RadioRA 3 fits.
When QSX Earns Its Keep
HomeWorks QSX earns its keep when the job includes wired Palladiom or Sivoia QS shades, centralized lighting panels, Ketra, DALI, or a larger set of specialty loads. It also earns it when the homeowner already knows the house will expand. A guest house, pool pavilion, wellness room, or a second phase of landscape lighting is much easier to absorb when the platform was chosen with headroom instead of just current room count.[1]
This is also where integration discipline matters. We often pair Lutron with a Crestron CP4-R or MC4-R for whole-home control, and sometimes with UniFi switching and routing already planned into the rack. That does not mean lighting becomes an afterthought inside a bigger automation stack. It means the lighting system should do lighting work natively, and the control system should orchestrate the house around it.
What Cave Group Locks Before Drywall
The cleanest way to avoid a platform mismatch is to force a few decisions early:
- Processor and network location. RadioRA 3 RR-PROC3-CW or a HomeWorks processor should have settled PoE, rack space, and service access before trim-out.
- Shade strategy. Decide early whether the openings want wireless Triathlon or Palladiom, or wired Palladiom or Sivoia QS, because the pocket and power details change with that choice.[1]
- Keypad family and finish. If the house wants Sunnata RF in standard openings, say it now. If it wants Palladiom or Alisse as part of the hardware schedule, say that even earlier.[2][4]
- Load schedule by fixture type. Mixed LED, ELV tape, MLV track, exterior lighting, and 0-10V should be mapped before devices are ordered; the industry is only getting more complex here, not simpler.[7]
- Human-centric lighting intent. If the client is even considering Ketra or Natural Show behavior later, do not back into QSX after the walls are closed.[3][5][8]
- Control boundaries. Let Lutron own scenes, dimming curves, and shade positions; let Crestron touchpanels, Sonance audio, and the rest of the AV stack call those scenes without rewriting the lighting logic.
The Short Answer
RadioRA 3 is the right answer for a finished or lightly renovated estate that wants serious lighting and shading control without turning the construction scope into a gut job. HomeWorks QSX is the right answer when the house is being drawn, rewired, or otherwise treated as a long-horizon architecture project, especially if finish options, wired shades, panelized loads, DALI, or Ketra are already in the conversation.
