Crestron CP4-R vs MC4-R vs DIN-AP4-R: Sizing Guide

Choosing between a Crestron CP4-R, MC4-R, and DIN-AP4-R is really a topology decision. Cave Group breaks down ports, placement, and the right fit for luxury homes.

The processor decision almost always gets made a week too late. In a Greenwich estate, the lighting loads are already assigned, the AV rack has a Kaleidescape slot, the gate call box is on the submittal, and somebody is still treating the control processor like a generic black box. That is how an MC4-R winds up being asked to behave like a CP4-R, or a DIN-AP4-R gets picked for a job that really needed rack-side I/O from day one.

Crestron’s 4-Series residential line makes the choice look simple: CP4-R, MC4-R, or DIN-AP4-R. In practice, the right answer has very little to do with square footage. It has more to do with topology: where the control ports need to live, how much hardwired I/O the house really needs, what Lutron HomeWorks QSX is handling natively, and how much unfinished scope is still hiding in the drawings.

At Cave Group, the residential stack is usually Crestron for orchestration, Lutron for lighting and shades, and UniFi underneath it. Once that is the brief, processor sizing stops being a catalog exercise.

Stop Sizing by Square Footage

The lazy shortcut is to ask how big the house is. The better question is how many systems the processor is expected to coordinate, and where those systems terminate.

That matters even more in 2026 because the endpoint count around a luxury residence keeps growing. Crestron Home OS 4.11, released June 30, made Configure Pro the standard configuration platform for Crestron Home, and the 4.10 update earlier this spring expanded support again with Faradite keypads, 80 Series touch screens, and new Cevo Mini Remote features including voice control and a guided-touch mode for dark rooms [1][2]. Lutron’s residential direction is adding still more device types and finish-sensitive controls around the same system, from Intelligent Lighting to the new Palladiom Drapery line announced July 20 [3][4]. On the network side, UniFi’s 2026 cycle added the Wi-Fi 7 U7 Mesh and the Dream Machine Beast gateway [5][6]. And when the theater brief now includes Kaleidescape’s new Strato K with 8K playback and 4K Cinematic up to 4:4:4, the control layer is coordinating a lot more than a few TVs and dimmers [7].

A 14,000-square-foot house with Lutron HomeWorks QSX carrying most of the lighting and shade logic, no distributed video, and very little hardwired third-party control can be an MC4-R job. A smaller house with a theater, motorized screens, gates, intercom, generator status, and outdoor AV can justify a CP4-R quickly. The processor does not care how large the living room feels. It cares how many things are landing on its ports and how much logic lives around them.

What the Three Processors Actually Are

MC4-R: Small Chassis, Real Processor

The MC4-R is not the “starter” processor. It is a compact 4-Series controller with 2 GB of SDRAM and 8 GB of flash, built-in infiNET EX, PoE power, one bidirectional RS-232 COM port, four IR ports, two relays, and two Versiport I/O points.

In the right project, that is enough. If Lutron HomeWorks QSX is handling the lighting and shade backbone, and Crestron Home is mostly coordinating AV, climate, touch screens, a few third-party serial devices, and a reasonable number of scenes, the MC4-R is often the cleanest answer. It tucks behind a display, inside furniture, or on a rack rail without demanding a full rack shelf mentality.

The built-in infiNET EX radio is the differentiator. If the project includes Crestron wireless devices, you do not have to budget an external gateway on day one. Where the MC4-R gets overextended is not usually raw processing. It is physical I/O and future creep. One serial port disappears fast. Two relays disappear fast. If the spec already includes gate control, a projector lift, a screen, or several serial devices, the processor is already growing external limbs.

DIN-AP4-R: Best When the Job Is Panel-First

The DIN-AP4-R is not just a smaller CP4-R. It is a panel-native control processor for jobs where the low-voltage enclosure is the logical home for control.

On paper, it is substantial: 2 GB of SDRAM, 8 GB of flash, four relays, eight I/O points, four IR/serial ports, two bidirectional COM ports that support RS-232/422/485, dual paralleled Cresnet ports, gigabit Ethernet, and power by either PoE or a 24VDC supply. When powered from the DIN-PWS30-277, it can provide up to 20 watts of Cresnet power. Physically, it occupies nine DIN modules, so it belongs in a system that has panel depth planned from the start.

That makes the DIN-AP4-R excellent in a house where the control problem is concentrated in the enclosure rather than the rack: hardwired contacts, relay logic, and third-party devices whose cable runs are already landing in the panel. The trap is assuming DIN automatically means “smaller house.” It does not. It means the architecture is panel-first. If the real center of gravity is a dedicated AV rack with multiple source devices and theater control, the DIN-AP4-R can become awkward even when the home itself is not especially large.

Unlike the MC4-R, the DIN-AP4-R does not give you a built-in infiNET EX gateway. If Crestron wireless devices are part of the brief, that has to be designed deliberately.

CP4-R: Rack-Native Headroom

The CP4-R is the box we reach for when the job is clearly not modest anymore. It is a 1RU rack-mount 4-Series processor with 4 GB of SDRAM and 8 GB of flash, eight relays, eight I/O points, eight IR ports, and three COM ports, with one of those COM ports supporting RS-232/422/485. It also supports up to 2,000 BACnet objects and can provide up to 24 watts of Cresnet power when running from its included power pack.

The useful part of that spec is not the memory number by itself. It is the combination of rack location, port count, and breathing room. If the house includes DM NVX, a Kaleidescape player, a Screen Innovations screen, a Trinnov or StormAudio theater stack, Samsung or LG displays, outdoor entertainment zones, and a few subsystems that still insist on direct serial or relay control, the CP4-R gives you room to wire the job cleanly.

This is also the safer choice when growth is obvious. Guest house this year, pool house next year, front gate later, theater tuning after move-in. Replacing a processor after commissioning is never just replacing a processor. It is downtime, backup migration, port remapping, and validation. The one thing the CP4-R is not is automatic; if the job is cleanly panelized, DIN can still be the better physical fit.

The Questions That Actually Decide It

Where Do the Control Ports Need to Live?

If the majority of hardwired control lives in the AV rack, start by looking at the CP4-R. If the majority of hardwired control lands in a structured enclosure, start by looking at the DIN-AP4-R. If the system only needs a modest number of direct ports and is otherwise network-heavy, the MC4-R becomes viable very quickly.

A processor hidden behind a display is fine when the job is really a display-side job. It is not fine when every meaningful third-party interface is 60 feet away in a different room.

What Is Crestron Really Orchestrating, and What Is Lutron Handling?

In a Cave Group residential system, lighting and shades are usually Lutron: HomeWorks QSX, Palladiom keypads, Palladiom or Sivoia QS shades, and sometimes Ketra if the lighting brief calls for it. That matters because it changes what the Crestron processor is responsible for.

If Lutron is carrying the load-level intelligence and Crestron is mainly handling scene recall, touch-panel UX, media control, intercom flow, and a limited number of third-party interfaces, the processor can often be smaller than the homeowner expects. Lutron’s current product direction reinforces that distinction. The July 2026 Palladiom Drapery launch extends the Palladiom language deeper into window treatments, and Lutron’s recent Intelligent Lighting push keeps expanding the finish and fixture side of the residential package [3][4]. More endpoints do not automatically mean you need a bigger Crestron processor. They mean you need to be honest about which ecosystem is doing what.

The reverse is also true. If Crestron is also collecting lots of hardwired status, driving local relays, coordinating theater logic, and managing multiple direct control paths, move up the processor ladder faster.

How Much Wireless and Outbuilding Sprawl Is in the Brief?

This is where people overestimate what the network solves. UniFi’s U7 Mesh is a real improvement for difficult Wi-Fi coverage and claims up to three times extended reach in mesh deployments, while Dream Machine Beast is aimed at a much stronger gateway class with newer compute and redundancy options [5][6]. Good. Use that. Build a stronger network.

But stronger Wi-Fi does not create local serial ports in a pool house. It does not create relay closures at the gate. It does not put I/O where the wiring lands. If a detached structure is part of the project, decide early whether you are extending control cleanly or just extending the SSID and hoping the rest sorts itself out.

How Much of the Scope Is Still Unfinished?

If the drawings are still moving, size for the job you can already see coming. Crestron’s own recent software updates are a reminder that supported endpoint types keep expanding [1][2]. Theater packages keep growing too; Kaleidescape’s new Strato K did not arrive to make systems simpler [7]. If the site meeting still includes the phrase “we may add,” that is not the moment to choose the smallest processor that technically works on today’s PDF.

Choose MC4-R When the House Is Simple in Topology

We like the MC4-R when the house has a clean Lutron backbone, a modest number of hardwired third-party interfaces, and one main control location. Sonance audio, Samsung displays, Lutron Palladiom keypads, a few Crestron touch screens, UniFi Wi-Fi 7, and polished scene logic do not require a large processor just to feel expensive.

Choose DIN-AP4-R When the Wiring Naturally Belongs in a Panel

We like the DIN-AP4-R when the electrician and low-voltage team have already told us where the truth lives: in the enclosure. If the device count is moderate but the hardwired control points are real, DIN is often cleaner than forcing everything back to a rack.

Choose CP4-R When the House Has Real AV Gravity

We default to CP4-R when the project has a dedicated rack, multiroom video, a serious theater, a growing list of direct-control devices, or obvious future phases. If the brief includes DM NVX, Kaleidescape, multiple local sources, several serial endpoints, outdoor entertainment zones, and direct relay logic, the CP4-R is usually the honest answer.

What to Lock Before Drywall

Five Decisions Worth Making Early

  • Lock the processor location before millwork and rack elevations are frozen. Rack, panel, or local mount is not a cosmetic choice.
  • Count direct serial, relay, and I/O needs from the actual subsystem list, not from memory. Gates, screens, lifts, fireplaces, sensors, and legacy devices add up fast.
  • Decide whether Crestron wireless support will come from the MC4-R’s built-in infiNET EX or from external gateways on CP4-R or DIN-AP4-R.
  • Decide how detached structures are being controlled. A stronger UniFi network is useful, but it is not a substitute for local control topology.
  • Leave physical growth space. One spare rack unit or reserved DIN capacity is cheap compared with reworking a commissioned system.

The Short Answer

If you are deciding between MC4-R and CP4-R, the answer is usually hiding in the port list and the rack layout. If you are deciding between MC4-R and DIN-AP4-R, the answer is usually hiding in the enclosure schedule. Square footage is the least useful input in the room.

For most luxury homes, the processor choice should feel obvious once the topology is drawn honestly. MC4-R for compact, well-scoped orchestration. DIN-AP4-R for panel-first control. CP4-R for rack-side density and headroom. Pick the box that matches where the house is telling you the control system actually lives.
