Most yards get speakers from one company, lighting from another, and a landscaper who buries whatever wire he has in the truck. Then something corrodes. We run sound, light, and control on one designed, plug-together infrastructure — and it answers to the same keypad as the house.

Two loud speakers on the back wall is how a yard gets noise complaints. Coastal Source outdoor speakers do it the other way: many small bollard speakers and in-ground subwoofers spread through the beds, each playing quietly, so the music is everywhere on your property and nowhere past the fence.

1000 Series bollards for the terrace and lawn; Pathfinder for a low profile along walks and under cabana ceilings; bollard subwoofers buried in the beds for the bottom end. Everything plugs together with the patented Coastal Connector, and it all streams from the same music system as the house. The Fixture You Don’t See.

HK Lighting builds outdoor architectural and landscape fixtures in Thousand Oaks, California — founded in 2005 by Hiroshi Kira on the clean, simple design principles he grew up with in Japan. The oak canopies in these photographs are HK: the hardware disappears into the property, and only the light remains.

Tree and specimen uplighting, facade, eave, and pergola wash, path and bollard, step and in-grade, moonlighting downlights, wall mounts, hanging and catenary. Every fixture is burn-in and water-tested before it ships. We specify them from the drawings, coordinate the rough-in with your builder and landscape architect, and aim them ourselves at night.

Questions We Hear

Outdoors, Answered

Will the neighbors hear it?+

Much less than with two big speakers on the house. Coastal Source spreads many small bollard speakers and buried subwoofers through the planting, each playing quietly, so the level is even across your property and drops off fast at the fence. We aim and balance the system at night, at the volume you actually use.

Can you add speakers and lighting without tearing up the yard?+

Most of the time. Coastal Source audio and lighting share one shallow trench and plug together with the waterproof Coastal Connector, so a finished property can usually be done in days with minimal disturbance. New construction is easier still — we coordinate the run with your landscape architect before hardscape goes in.

What about salt, snow, and sprinklers?+

Coastal Source fixtures are solid brass, designed and performance-tested in the Florida Keys; every connection is a sealed Coastal Connector, not a splice in the dirt. HK fixtures are burn-in and water-tested before they ship. We have systems on the Jersey Shore and in Hamptons winters.

Does it work with my Lutron or Crestron system?+

VIA lighting is native to Lutron HomeWorks — the same keypads and schedules as the house. HK fixtures dim on Lutron or Crestron. The audio streams from whichever music system runs the house, so the terrace is just another zone in the app.

Can the outdoor scenes match the inside?+

Yes — the Ketra and Rania modules inside VIA are the same ones in the ceilings indoors, on one HomeWorks system. “Evening” on the kitchen keypad warms the terrace and the trees at the same moment. See the indoor lighting page →
