Yacht Connectivity Handover Before the Cyclades

A pre-departure checklist for yacht managers leaving Athens, Lavrio, or Piraeus: WAN priority, Starlink and cellular assumptions, guest and crew networks, remote access, diagnostics, and troubleshooting authority.

A yacht can leave the dock with working internet and still have an unclear connectivity plan. Before departing Athens, Lavrio, or Piraeus for the Cyclades, the yacht manager should make sure the captain, engineer, owner representative, and support team agree on how the network is meant to behave when conditions change.

Lock the WAN Behavior Before Departure

The handover should document every internet path on board: Starlink Maritime, cellular SIMs, marina Wi-Fi if used, and any remaining satellite or shore-side connection. For each WAN, record whether it is primary, backup, bonded, limited to certain traffic, or kept disabled unless crew intentionally enables it.

This matters because multi-WAN systems can be configured several ways. Peplink describes SpeedFusion as combining WAN sources such as 5G, satellite, and wired service, with bandwidth bonding, smoothing, and hot failover available depending on design and configuration. Its Starlink material also notes that Starlink and cellular have complementary strengths, with cellular often useful as a backup or gap filler when satellite performance is affected by handoffs or obstructions.

For a Cyclades departure, the checklist should answer these questions:

  • Which connection is preferred when the yacht is at the dock?
  • Which connection is preferred underway?
  • Are guest devices allowed to use bonded bandwidth, or is bonding reserved for operational traffic?
  • What happens when Starlink drops, is obstructed, or is intentionally stowed?
  • Which SIMs are active, which carriers do they use, and who is allowed to change SIM priority?
  • Are any data caps, roaming limits, or owner policies documented for crew?

Do not rely on a verbal explanation. The captain needs a simple expected-behavior note: for example, primary Starlink with cellular failover, or bonded Starlink and cellular for selected traffic, with guest streaming deprioritized behind bridge, engineering, remote support, and security services.

Separate Guest Comfort From Vessel Operations

The yacht network should not treat every device equally. Owner devices, guest Wi-Fi, crew devices, AV systems, cameras, control processors, and support access should be separated by policy. UniFi can distribute Wi-Fi throughout the vessel, but the design still needs clear network names, VLANs or equivalent segmentation, and rules for who can see what.

At handover, the yacht manager should receive a network map that shows:

  • Guest SSIDs and passwords approved for the trip.
  • Crew SSIDs and device enrollment rules.
  • AV and control network ranges.
  • Camera and NVR network placement.
  • Remote support access paths.
  • Any blocked traffic or application steering policies.

The goal is not to make the network complicated for crew. It is to avoid a situation where a guest streaming session, a crew phone, and a remote diagnostic session all compete without priority. Peplink's handbook includes guidance areas for firewall access rules, SSID settings, outbound policy, application steering, and diagnostic reporting; those are configuration topics that should be settled before the vessel leaves reliable shore-side access.

Confirm Remote Access Ownership and Troubleshooting Authority

Remote access is helpful only when ownership is clear. Before departure, decide who can access the router, UniFi console, Starlink account, cellular carrier portals, Crestron monitoring, and any cloud dashboards. Also decide who can make changes while the yacht is underway.

A practical handover packet should include:

  • Named support contacts and escalation order.
  • Account ownership for Starlink, cellular, Peplink/InControl, UniFi, and monitoring platforms.
  • Remote access status and whether assistance must be enabled by crew.
  • Firmware update policy during cruising periods.
  • Backup configuration export location.
  • A recent diagnostic report from the router and network controller.

Peplink's support handbook specifically identifies InControl as a cloud management platform for visibility and remote troubleshooting, and includes procedures for remote web admin access, diagnostic reports, email notifications, firmware settings, cellular signal checks, and WAN analysis. Those records give the support team a baseline before the first underway issue.

Run a Short Acceptance Test at the Dock

A connectivity handover should end with a witnessed test, not just a folder of credentials. Keep it short and practical:

  1. Confirm guest Wi-Fi, crew Wi-Fi, AV/control devices, and remote support all connect as expected.
  2. Verify the visible WAN order in the router dashboard.
  3. Simulate loss of the primary WAN where appropriate and confirm traffic moves to the intended backup path.
  4. Confirm the captain or engineer can identify whether the active path is Starlink, cellular, bonded, or shore-side.
  5. Pull and store fresh diagnostics after the test.

The test should not promise coverage across the Cyclades. It should prove that the vessel's own system behavior matches the design while the team can still correct mistakes at the dock.
