Superyacht AV and Automation Cost Guide for Owners

Budgeting a superyacht refit means pricing access, redundancy, control, and cinema properly. Here is what serious Crestron, UniFi, and onboard AV scope really costs in 2026.

The bad budgets usually start with a harmless sentence: it is just a screen swap.

A week later, the owner wants the sun deck TV visible in full glare, the captain wants stable Wi-Fi at anchor, the engineer wants fewer mystery boxes in the rack, and the yard wants every cable route frozen before the joinery goes back in. In a Lauderdale Marine Center refit, that is the point where the job stops being about televisions and starts being about infrastructure.

At Cave Group, we budget yachts by failure point, not by cabin count. A house can tolerate the occasional annoyance. A yacht cannot. Heat, vibration, salt, limited access, generator transitions, patchy shore services, and the reality of troubleshooting underway all change the number.

The useful question is not what does a superyacht AV system cost. The useful question is what scope are you actually trying to hold together when the boat leaves the yard.

A focused refresh can stay in the mid-six figures. A serious yacht-wide modernization usually moves into the high sixes and low sevens. Once the brief includes AV-over-IP video, real network resilience, proper lighting and control logic, surveillance, and a reference-grade cinema, the budget climbs fast. The difference is almost never the price of the display. It is the price of getting the backbone right.

What Actually Moves The Number

Access, cable paths, and power

The hardware list is the easy part. The expensive part is everything wrapped around it.

A screen on a yacht is rarely just a screen. It may need a lift, backing structure, vibration control, thermal management, glare management, a dedicated power strategy, a service path, and a cable route that does not force a carpenter back into a finished wall six months later. The same applies to speakers, touchpanels, cameras, and access readers.

This is why old drawings matter so much. If the existing cabling is documented, labeled, and testable, a refit can move quickly. If the boat arrives with undocumented splices, abandoned cable bundles, and racks built by three different vendors over ten years, labor takes over the budget.

The network is now part of hospitality

The modern yacht guest experience rides on bandwidth long before anyone talks about cinema. Phones, tablets, IPTV, streaming, conferencing, bridge data access, crew traffic, cameras, access control, and service VPNs all want the same backbone.

That lines up with the way the market is talking right now. In June 2026, SuperyachtNews published a blunt summary from Omniaccess: Starlink is not enough as a sole path on a serious yacht, and high-density vessels need redundancy, multiple antenna paths, automatic switching, and a real policy for how traffic is handled when one link degrades [1].

Inside the boat, the network is getting more AV-specific, not less. Ubiquiti's April 2026 EAV Switching launch centered on PTP timing, sub-microsecond synchronization, and compatibility with Dante, AES67, SMPTE ST 2110, and SDVoE-ready workflows [5]. That matters because a yacht with Crestron DM NVX video, distributed audio, and live camera feeds is no longer carrying a simple house network. It is carrying time-sensitive media traffic that needs predictable behavior.

Remote support is changing too. UniFi Network 10.5, released in June 2026, added Test and Confirm, automatic rollback, and a Time Machine view of historical client activity [6]. Those are not cosmetic features. They are exactly the kind of safeguards a captain and shoreside team want when touching a live network remotely during the season.

The budgeting lesson is simple: price the network like infrastructure. That means core switching, segmented VLANs, properly placed access points, multi-WAN policy through Peplink or an equivalent architecture, Starlink Maritime strategy, UPS protection, labeling, and remote support access that does not depend on guesswork.

Cyber risk is no longer a separate memo

The old split between AV, IT, and security keeps getting less believable on yachts. Surveillance touches the network. Remote support touches the network. Guest privacy touches the network. Bridge-adjacent convenience features touch the network.

Nauta Maritime wrote in June 2026 that underwriters are increasingly asking for evidence of cyber risk management at policy renewal, and specifically called out default credentials, unaudited remote access, and weak segmentation as real claims exposure [2]. That is not an abstract compliance note. It is budget scope.

If a yacht wants guest Wi-Fi, crew Wi-Fi, service VPN access, UniFi Protect cameras, and remote support, then segmentation, credential policy, and documented access control belong in the brief from day one. If they show up at the end, they arrive as delay and change order.

Control and lighting are labor, not trim

On yachts, we prefer to keep the control and lighting logic inside the Crestron world for a reason. When AV, lighting scenes, interface logic, alerts, and subsystem triggers live on one backbone, fault tracing is shorter and redelivery is cleaner.

Crestron made Configure Pro the standard Crestron Home OS configuration tool on June 30, 2026 [3]. On the video side, Crestron documented new firmware 7.4 features for the DM-NVX-384 and DM-NVX-385 platform on May 5, 2026 [4]. That is good news for capability. It is also a reminder that the control and distribution layer now behaves like living infrastructure, not fixed millwork.

In practical terms, that means a Crestron CP4-R or MC4-R, DM-NVX-384 or DM-NVX-385 endpoints, TSW-1080 or TS-1080 control points, Horizon or Cameo keypads, and Crestron lighting modules need real commissioning time. If the lighting brief includes DALI loads, color temperature control, and scene behavior tied to time of day, budget more engineering. If the owner wants bridge camera pop-ups, audio ducking, party scenes, and deck-by-deck service modes, budget more engineering again.

The mistake is treating programming as an afterthought because the processors look small in the rack. The intelligence is not small. It just does not weigh much.

Budget Bands That Hold Up In Real Refit Work

These are planning numbers, not bids. They assume a proper marine integrator, real commissioning, and a yacht owner who expects the system to survive the season rather than the handover photo.

35 to 45m focused refresh: about $175,000 to $400,000

This is the range where discipline matters more than volume.

A good project here might include a Crestron control refresh around a CP4-R or MC4-R, selective TSW-1080 or TS-1080 user interfaces, a rack cleanup, UniFi switching and wireless refresh, better WAN policy, selective display replacement, a few strong audio zones, and surveillance upgrades in the most-used locations. If the existing cabling tests clean and the joinery can stay mostly closed, this range works.

This is also where owners overspend on distribution they do not need. Not every guest cabin requires a DM NVX endpoint. Not every space needs a touchpanel if a keypad and a well-built scene do the job. Sometimes a hardwired local source is smarter than matrixing everything. Spend the saved money on the network core, serviceability, and documentation.

45 to 60m yacht-wide modernization: about $450,000 to $1.2 million

This is the range where the job usually stops pretending to be a refresh.

Now the brief often includes a new central rack strategy, broader Crestron control scope, DM NVX video distribution, multiple salon and deck zones, audio in owner and guest areas, camera integration, outdoor display engineering, structured surveillance, and a real guest and crew Wi-Fi plan. This is also where lighting scenes start to matter. On yachts, that usually means keeping the onboard lighting control path under Crestron rather than splitting logic across ecosystems.

A typical cost swing in this band comes from three questions:

  1. Are you reusing cable or replacing it?
  2. Are the technical spaces ventilated and serviceable, or are you rebuilding racks in bad conditions?
  3. Is the exterior entertainment brief modest, or does the owner want party-deck performance with real bass, coverage control, and reliable daylight viewing?

Once the answer to those questions gets ambitious, the number moves quickly.

60m+ owner-grade reference program: about $1.3 million to $3 million+

This is where yachts start asking for floating-hotel convenience with private-cinema expectations.

Here the scope usually includes a more serious Crestron architecture, larger DM NVX counts, segmented network policy, denser wireless design, more surveillance, better remote support tooling, and dedicated entertainment destinations rather than just scattered endpoints. A proper owner brief may also call for high-output exterior audio, a beach club that performs as a day lounge and evening venue, and one room that is treated as a true cinema rather than a room with dark walls and expensive chairs.

This is also where redundancy becomes explicit instead of implied. Dual power strategy, WAN failover policy, spare transceivers, backup images, service VPN architecture, and documented redelivery standards all need line items. If they do not, they still exist. They are just hiding inside delay.

The Line Items Owners Undervalue

Exterior AV is harder than interior AV

The upper deck is where budgets get embarrassed.

A display that looks fine on a spec sheet can fail in direct sun, in salt haze, or because the mounting depth killed the drainage plan. Audio that feels full in a showroom can turn thin and aggressive in open air if the speaker choice, dispersion, and sub strategy were never matched to the deck geometry.

This is where brand choice starts to mean something. A modest interior zone on Sonance or James Loudspeaker is one conversation. A weather-exposed entertaining deck with K-Array, James, or Coastal Source, proper DSP, and serious low-frequency control is another conversation entirely. On yachts, the gap between those two conversations is usually labor, protection, and tuning.

The cinema budget is never just the projector budget

Owners now arrive with better reference points than they had even two years ago. Kaleidescape's June 18, 2026 Strato K launch added native 8K playback and a new 4K Cinematic mode with up to 4:4:4 chroma [7]. Trinnov's AltitudeCI, shipping since February 23, 2026, introduced scalable channel growth in two-channel steps [8]. Both developments point in the same direction: the top end of private playback is moving, and expectations are moving with it.

That matters because a cinema line item is really five line items:

  • source and control
  • projection and screen
  • loudspeakers and amplification
  • room treatment and isolation
  • cooling, power, calibration, and commissioning

A yacht cinema can start around $120,000 if the room is modest and the expectations are sane. It can also move well past $600,000 once the owner wants reference audio, proper isolation, complex channel counts, Barco-class projection, Trinnov processing, Kaleidescape content, and finish work that hides the engineering without making it unserviceable.

The practical takeaway is to define the room honestly. Is it a family movie room, or is it a reference room? Those are different budgets, and the expensive mistake is pretending they are the same until late in the yard period.

Surveillance is not a camera count. It is a retention and access policy

We see this mistake constantly.

A brief arrives asking for a few cameras. What it really needs to answer is this:

  • what views matter
  • who can see them
  • how long footage must be retained
  • whether bridge and crew access differ
  • whether the owner wants AI search or just recording

A UniFi Protect package with G6 Pro Dome, G6 Pro Turret, G6 PTZ, or G6 Pro 360 models is one part of the cost. Recording policy is the other part. If the brief wants long-horizon 4K retention on an ENVR Core 300, that is a storage conversation before it is a camera conversation.

Commissioning, labeling, and spares decide the season

The least glamorous line on the budget often does the most work.

A yacht that behaves in August was usually documented in spring. That means rack elevations, labels that match drawings, backed-up processor files, network maps, camera naming standards, as-built photos, spare parts, and handover notes a chief engineer can actually use.

On serious yachts, that line item lands in the low double digits as a percentage of the package more often than clients expect. If it is near zero, it is usually not because the yacht needs less of it. It is because someone hid it somewhere else.

What To Lock Before The Yard Starts

The decisions that keep the budget honest

  • Decide whether the yacht will run one converged network or clearly separated guest, crew, service, and AV segments.
  • Freeze display sizes, lift details, projector positions, and speaker back-box locations before finished surfaces close.
  • Define the WAN policy in plain language: dockside service, Starlink Maritime, backup path, and which traffic loses priority first.
  • Decide whether the onboard lighting logic stays fully inside Crestron or whether legacy loads will remain and need accommodation.
  • Write the surveillance brief by view, retention days, and access rights rather than by raw camera count.
  • Carry contingency. On older yachts with uncertain cable history, 10 to 15 percent is a prudent planning number.

The cleanest budgets are the ones that admit what the yacht is supposed to do. If the brief is mostly entertainment, spend there. If the yacht is really being asked to operate like a floating resort with private-cinema expectations and enterprise-grade connectivity, price it that way from the first worklist meeting.

The expensive mistake is rarely spending too much on AV. It is pretending the backbone is optional.
