Trinnov vs StormAudio vs Datasat: A Reference Cinema Processor Comparison

In a serious residential theater, the processor is not a badge purchase. Here is how Cave Group judges Trinnov, StormAudio, and Datasat when the room has to perform, not just impress on paper.

Reference Is a Measurement Problem

Reference is an overused word in private cinema. In a Greenwich estate, it usually shows up when the theater is still studs, the screen wall depth is being negotiated, and someone asks whether the processor line item really needs to be that large.

That is the wrong question. The processor is not a trophy purchase. It is the part of the system that decides how honestly the room can be engineered: speaker mapping, bass behavior, channel count, codec support, control integration, and the margin you still have when the room is no longer theoretical. In 2026, the category is moving away from adjective-heavy demos and toward measurable performance, with more attention on RP22 targets and RP32-style verification. Residential Systems put it plainly on March 24, 2026: the conversation is shifting toward data, documentation, and proving that the room performs as designed.[1]

At Cave Group, this is rarely a rack-only decision. The processor has to live inside a system that may also include a Crestron CP4-R, a TSW-1080 touchscreen, Kaleidescape playback, Barco Residential projection, and Lutron HomeWorks QSX scenes with Palladiom keypads. If those parts are disciplined and the processor is not, the room still feels unfinished.

What Actually Gets Compared

When people say Trinnov vs StormAudio vs Datasat, they are usually comparing three very different design philosophies.

Trinnov is the physics-first path. It makes the most sense when the room will be designed around acoustic objectives instead of cosmetic compromises. StormAudio is the pragmatic high-performance path. It gives you a lot of routing, channel density, and bass-management flexibility without demanding that the whole room revolve around one methodology. Datasat is the legacy cinema-brain option. It still has serious credentials, but in new residential reference rooms it now enters the conversation mostly because an older room already has one.

Why The Room Usually Decides First

If the room is only ever going to be a conventional 7.2.4 or 9.4.4 theater, the smartest processor choice may not be the one with the most mythology around it. If the room is headed toward multiple seating rows, non-ideal speaker locations, or a front-and-rear bass array, the processor decision changes quickly. The mistake is choosing the processor first, then asking the room to explain itself afterward.

Trinnov: When The Room Is Built Around Acoustics

The fastest way to understand Trinnov is to stop thinking about it as a decoder brand and start thinking about it as an engineering platform.

Altitude Is About Growth, Not Just Prestige

Trinnov's current AltitudeCI platform is configurable from 8 to 32 outputs in 2-channel steps, with a build-to-order path to 64 channels. The current product page also lists HDMI 2.1 with HDCP 2.3, 40 Gbps bandwidth on all inputs and outputs, and the full Trinnov toolset: Optimizer, WaveForming, and Remapping.[2] That matters because it changes how you phase a theater build. You can design the room you need now without locking the processor into a dead-end channel count.

Trinnov's February 23, 2026 shipping announcement made another useful point: channel capacity can scale over time, but every AltitudeCI ships with the full Trinnov processing stack.[3] In other words, this is not a stripped model that gets its intelligence later. You are buying the architecture up front and deciding how much of it the room needs today.

There is also an important nuance in that same announcement. Trinnov explicitly says the Altitude16 and Altitude32 remain the better fit for the majority of high-performance home theater installations that are built around traditional external power amplifiers.[3] That is the kind of manufacturer self-awareness we pay attention to. Not every serious theater needs an AltitudeCI, especially if the room is staying fundamentally analog on the output side.

Where Trinnov Earns Its Price

Trinnov is easiest to justify when the room itself is ambitious enough to exploit its tools.

A March 30, 2026 Trinnov technical article on predicting bass output in a WaveForming room treats bass design as a system problem, not a last-minute EQ exercise. The inputs to the model are room cross-section, the number of front subwoofers, and each driver's peak flow rate. The article also describes WaveForming as a front-and-rear-wall array approach meant to replace standing-wave chaos with a more controlled directional field.[4] That is exactly why Trinnov stops being a luxury add-on and starts being a design decision.

If the room has multiple rows, awkward speaker geometry, or a bass plan that depends on more than conventional subwoofer summing, Trinnov has a real argument. If the room is straightforward and the budget tradeoff is one processor tier higher versus better isolation, more subwoofer displacement, or stronger LCRs, we usually buy the room first.

What Trinnov Does Not Fix

Trinnov does not rescue lazy construction. It does not compensate for a projector hush box that rattles, a riser that became an accidental bass trap, or a screen wall that left no serious volume for subwoofers. It also does not remove the need for disciplined control programming. If the room still needs a clean one-button experience through Crestron and a sane lighting state through HomeWorks QSX, the processor does not get a pass just because it measures beautifully.

StormAudio: When Flexibility And Bass Management Matter Most

StormAudio has become the processor we talk about when the client wants a serious room, but the answer does not have to be Trinnov.

The Elite MK3 Is A Very Practical Reference Processor

StormAudio's current ISP Elite MK3 page lays out the argument clearly: up to 32 channels of decoding and upmixing, 16-, 24-, or 32-channel analog XLR outputs, up to 32 AES/EBU channels, up to 32 AoIP channels over AES67/Dante, HDMI 2.1 with HDCP 2.3 at 40 Gbps, and Dirac Live Room Correction, Bass Control, and Active Room Treatment included.[5] That is not theory. That is a very workable specification for a modern residential cinema.

In practice, StormAudio gives you a ladder. Core 16 exists for rooms that top out lower. Elite MK3 is where most high-end analog and hybrid rooms get serious. Evo becomes attractive when the conversation turns fully digital. That range is one reason StormAudio is so often the rational choice in a room where the owner wants reference performance but the budget still has to leave room for loudspeakers, subwoofers, acoustic treatment, seating, and actual construction.

A processor does not make bass on its own. If a StormAudio room lets us reallocate money toward better subwoofers, more isolation, or a cleaner LCR deployment behind a Screen Innovations acoustically transparent screen, that can be the better audible decision.

StormAudio Shows You The Service Reality

One reason we take StormAudio seriously is not just how it sounds. It is how openly the platform behaves in the field.

StormAudio's current firmware page lists FW 4.7r3p1, released June 22, 2026. The release notes are specific: 4.7r3 had moved to HDMI firmware v1.71, field HDCP issues were identified, and the company rolled back to v1.70 while it investigated the regression. The same page also notes that units coming from versions prior to 4.6r0p2 need the latest package applied twice for a complete update.[6]

That is not a red flag. That is the kind of detail we want from a manufacturer. It means the processor gets treated like a maintained system, not like an appliance. It also means you do not push firmware on Thursday if the family is planning a screening on Friday.

Dirac Matters More Than It Did Two Years Ago

StormAudio's other advantage is that it is aligned with where active room treatment is heading. On June 30, 2026, CE Pro reported that Dirac expanded Active Room Treatment into the Dirac Live Processor suite, making ART more accessible through software-based workflows and underscoring how central cooperative bass control has become in the category.[7]

That trend supports StormAudio's position. If you believe the future of residential cinema bass is more about coordinated loudspeaker behavior and less about brute-force correction after the fact, StormAudio is sitting in the right place. Its value is not that it copies Trinnov. Its value is that it gives you a different, credible route to a high-performance result.

Datasat: Still Respectable, Mostly In Existing Rooms

Datasat deserves respect because it came from real cinema DNA, and plenty of older private theaters still sound good with one in the rack.

What The RS20i Still Offers

Datasat's current RS20i page still presents a serious processor: 16 channels of digital audio, HDMI 2.0b pass-through, up to 4 subwoofers, Dirac Live room optimization, Ethernet and RS232 control, and Crestron integration support on the feature list.[8] If you walk into an existing room built around an RS20i, you are not automatically walking into a problem.

For a targeted retrofit, continuity can matter. If the rest of the theater is acoustically solid, the owner likes the room, and the control system is stable, keeping a Datasat can be the right answer. Not every upgrade starts with ripping out the processor.

Why It Is Hard To Specify In A New Estate Theater

The same current RS20i page is also the best argument against starting a fresh reference room there. The latest downloadable RS20i update shown on that page is V1.05.07, dated November 19, 2020.[8]

That does not mean Datasat is useless. It means the public product cadence does not read like Trinnov or StormAudio in 2026. In a new single-family estate theater, where the rest of the room is being designed around current immersive layouts, current HDMI expectations, and a modern service posture, that matters.

So the Datasat position is straightforward. If you already own a good Datasat room, evaluate it honestly before replacing it. If you are drawing a new reference cinema from scratch, Datasat is usually the third call, not the first.

What To Lock Before Drywall

A processor comparison only becomes useful when it changes early decisions.

Five Decisions That Change The Answer

  • Decide the bass strategy before millwork. A Trinnov-style front and rear array room needs physical planning long before calibration day. A more conventional multi-sub StormAudio room still needs enclosure volume, wiring, power, and structural allowances.
  • Decide the real speaker count before ordering amplifiers. 7.4.4, 9.4.6, and 11.x.x are not small variations. They change rack density, heat, cost, and the processor tier that makes sense.
  • Decide whether the room stays analog or moves toward AoIP. If networked audio is part of the plan, design the switch fabric early. In practice that usually means managed AV switching, often on dedicated UniFi Enterprise infrastructure, not a spare port on the house network.
  • Decide how the room is actually lived in. The owner should touch a Crestron TSW-1080, let a CP4-R call the system state, and let Lutron HomeWorks QSX handle the lighting scene. Nobody should browse processor menus in the dark.
  • Decide how firmware gets handled after handover. StormAudio's June 2026 release notes are a reminder that processor maintenance is an operational plan, not an afterthought.[6]

This is also where the rest of the Cave Group stack matters. A Kaleidescape movie server, the display chain, the screen system, the lighting load schedule, and the control UI all need to agree with the processor choice. If they do not, the room can still look expensive and feel clumsy.

The Short Answer

There is no serious one-line winner here.

Which Processor We Specify Most Often

  • Choose Trinnov when the room is ambitious enough to exploit Remapping, advanced bass planning, or flexible channel growth. In traditional amplifier rooms that usually points to Altitude16 or Altitude32; in more networked architectures, AltitudeCI becomes more attractive.[2][3][4]
  • Choose StormAudio when the room needs to be excellent, flexible, and rational on budget. ISP Elite MK3 is easy to defend in a serious residential theater, and in many rooms it leaves more money for the parts that create the audible result: loudspeakers, subwoofers, isolation, and treatment.[5][6][7]
  • Keep or retrofit Datasat when continuity is the main objective. For a new Greenwich reference theater built today, it is usually the legacy option, not the first specification.[8]

The processor does not create reference by itself. The room becomes reference when the processor choice, speaker layout, bass geometry, control stack, and commissioning method all point in the same direction. That decision belongs on the drawing set, not just on the equipment schedule.
