Mediterranean Refit Yards, The Yard Period, Used Well.

The technology refit, planned into the yard period: Crestron 4-Series control and lighting, DM NVX video, marine audio, UniFi networks, cameras and Starlink Maritime fitted while the vessel is at MB92 Barcelona, STP Palma, Monaco Marine or MB92 La Ciotat, Amico & Co in Genoa, or Lusben in Livorno and Viareggio.

Mediterranean Refit Yards

A Yard Period Is a Window.

The western Mediterranean holds the largest refit capacity in the world. MB92 Barcelona hauls yachts to 115 meters on a 4,800-tonne shiplift and runs more than 100 projects a year; STP Palma welcomes over 1,200 yachts a year across 162,000 square meters of hardstanding with six travel lifts, including Europe's only 1,000-tonne unit; Amico & Co in Genoa manages more than 130 projects a year with a 102-meter covered graving dock; Monaco Marine's La Ciotat yard handles yachts to 160 meters and completed 55 projects in 2024; Lusben is modernizing Livorno with a 2,400-tonne syncrolift and a 180-meter floating dock through 2027.

The technology refit lives inside that window. The haul-out date, the days the yard's trades own the cable trays, and the day the vessel must be back in the water decide when the AV, the network, the lighting control and the cameras can be touched. We plan backward from the relaunch: the backbone goes in while the yard has the panels open, the equipment rooms are finished while the paint shed is busy elsewhere, and commissioning, crew training and the documentation that Cave Watch will use later happen before sea trials, not after.

01 · Scope

Scoped Into the Yard Plan

AV, control, lighting, network and camera work written as a line in the yard's project plan, with cable paths, equipment-room power and cooling, and the shore power and fiber the yard provides at the berth, so no trade waits on another.

02 · Platform

Crestron and UniFi, Marine-Spec

Crestron 4-Series control and lighting, DM NVX video, Kaleidescape, L-Acoustics and Coastal Source audio, UniFi networking and Protect cameras, and Starlink Maritime with Peplink failover, every component rated for salt, vibration and vessel power.

03 · Paperwork

Customs and Power, Understood

A non-EU yacht under Temporary Admission loses that status for refit work and moves to Inward Processing, and European shore power is 230-volt, 50-hertz on IEC 60309 connectors, so equipment is specified, declared and powered for the yard it is in.

At a Glance

The yards, in numbers.

MB92 Barcelona
A 4,800-tonne shiplift hauls out yachts up to 115 meters, alongside a 2,000-tonne syncrolift and a 150-tonne travel lift across 124,000 square meters; the yard provides shore power up to 400 volts and 800 kilowatts, or 6 kilovolts and 1,800 kilowatts, per yacht plus DSL and fiber, and handles more than 100 refit projects a year.
STP Palma
Yachts up to 120 meters and 1,000 tonnes on six travel lifts, including Europe's only 1,000-tonne unit, across 162,000 square meters of hardstanding; more than 1,200 yachts and 2,000 lift operations a year.
Genoa
Amico & Co manages more than 130 refit projects a year, 8 to 10 of them high-complexity, with a 102-meter covered graving dock built in 2014 and a 4,000-tonne shiplift for yachts up to 95 meters.
La Ciotat
Monaco Marine's La Ciotat shipyard spans 45,000 square meters, handles yachts up to 160 meters and 2,000 tonnes, and completed 55 projects in 2024; the neighboring Compositeworks yard became MB92 La Ciotat after MB92's acquisition and merger with Blohm+Voss La Ciotat.
Livorno and Viareggio
Lusben's Livorno site is being modernized between 2023 and 2027 with a 2,400-tonne syncrolift and a 180-meter floating dock; its Viareggio yard runs a climate-controlled paint booth for boats up to 50 meters, with a 34-berth marina and a helideck.
Customs
Non-EU-flagged yachts may stay in EU waters up to 18 months under Temporary Admission without paying VAT, but that status is excluded once the yacht undergoes refit and repair, which falls under Inward Processing Relief instead.
Shore power
European marinas and yards follow IEC 60309 connectors, blue for 220 to 240-volt single-phase and red for 380 to 400-volt three-phase in 16, 32 and 63-amp ratings, on a 230-volt, 50-hertz standard rather than North America's 60 hertz.

Questions About Mediterranean Refit Yards

Mediterranean Refit Yards, Answered

When in the yard period does the technology work happen?+

Backbone first, finishes last. Cabling, equipment-room power and cooling, and rack positions go in while the yard's trades have the panels and trays open; devices, displays, keypads and cameras are fitted as the interiors close; commissioning, crew training and documentation finish before sea trials. We write the technology scope as a line in the yard's project plan so the dates are shared.

Which yards do you work at?+

The Mediterranean refit yards: MB92 Barcelona, STP Palma, Monaco Marine and MB92 La Ciotat, Amico & Co in Genoa, Lusben in Livorno and Viareggio, and the Greek yards at Perama and Lavrion. We travel for installation milestones and commissioning and support the vessel remotely afterward through Cave Watch. Our published yacht project is a 65-meter refit in Monaco in 2024.

Does refit work change the yacht's customs status in Europe?+

It can. A non-EU-flagged yacht can stay in EU waters for up to 18 months under Temporary Admission, but that status is excluded once the yacht is in refit and repair, which falls under Inward Processing instead. The yard and the owner's agent handle the declaration; we supply the equipment list they need for it.

Is the equipment different for a European yard?+

Mostly in power and declarations. Shore power in European yards is 230-volt, 50-hertz on IEC 60309 connectors, so racks, amplifiers and anything motor-driven are specified for it, and CE-marked where the flag or the yard requires it. The platforms are the same: Crestron 4-Series control and lighting, DM NVX video, UniFi networking, Starlink Maritime with Peplink failover.

Who supports the vessel after it leaves the yard?+

We do, remotely first. Cave Watch monitors the network, the Crestron system through XiO Cloud, the UniFi equipment and the cameras, fixes most faults without a visit, and schedules one at the next port when it is needed. The crew gets documented operation, labeled racks and a single point of contact.

Send the Yard Period.

Tell us the yard, the dates the vessel is out of the water, and what is being touched: the AV, the network, the lighting, the cameras, or all of it. We will scope the technology package around the yard's schedule, name what we need from the yard's electrical contractor, and commission before sea trials.
