The camera that keeps the front elevation clean is usually not the camera that reads a face at the gate. On a Saddle River estate, those are different jobs. The approach wants reach and obvious aim. The front door wants a housing that is harder to grab. The rear terrace wants coverage that disappears into stone, cedar, and soffit lines until someone actually needs footage.
UniFi's current G6 lineup makes that split plain if you read the hardware instead of the box art. The base G6 Bullet and G6 Turret share 4K resolution, a 1/1.8-inch 8MP sensor, 30 m IR, and IK04 impact protection at $199. The G6 Dome keeps the same imaging class but steps up to IK10 vandal protection at $279. The Pro Bullet, Pro Turret, and Pro Dome move to a larger 1/1.2-inch sensor, 2.36x optical zoom, and 40 m IR, with the Pro Dome again carrying IK10. Ubiquiti is also repeating that same dome-turret-bullet logic in the announced G6 Edge line, with the Edge Bullet stretched to 60 m IR while the Edge Dome and Edge Turret stay at 40 m.[1]
Start With the Failure, Not the Form Factor
Most estate camera mistakes start with an architectural question instead of a security one. Which body looks cleaner. Which one matches the stucco. Which one disappears under the soffit. Those matter, but they come second.
The first question is what failure you can tolerate. Missing a plate at the gate is a different failure than losing the first three seconds of an approach because a dome cover caught glare. So is mounting a beautiful low-profile camera where it can be smacked with a broom from a porch rail. Form factor is not style. It is a decision about reach, survivability, adjustment range, serviceability, and how infrared behaves after pollen, salt, and sprinkler mist have had a season to work on the housing.
That is why the same estate usually wants all three. One body on every elevation is almost never the right answer.
Dome vs Turret vs Bullet in Real Estate Work
G6 Dome: Best where hands can reach it
A dome is the right answer when the camera sits close to people. Front doors. Garage pedestrian entries. Covered breezeways. Pool house doors. Any spot where a ladder, a ball, or a curious guest can get close enough to touch the housing. The reason is not subtle: the G6 Dome carries IK10 impact resistance, while the base G6 Bullet and G6 Turret sit at IK04.[1]
The other reason is visual. A dome sits tighter to the architecture. On limestone, shiplap, or a painted soffit, it reads less like hardware and more like a finish detail. That matters on a luxury facade where the camera should not dominate the sightline.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Domes punish bad placement and neglect. Put one where headlights or low sun rake across the bubble and you can create flare at the exact moment you want a clean image. Let the cover haze over with pollen or mineral deposits and night performance drops first. Outdoor domes can work very well, but they need the right height, the right angle, and occasional cleaning. We like them near entries and circulation points, not as the default answer for every exterior corner.
G6 Turret: Usually the best all-around estate camera
If a client asks us for one G6 body that solves the most problems, the answer is usually the turret. The base G6 Turret shares the G6 Bullet's 4K resolution, 1/1.8-inch 8MP sensor, 30 m IR, and $199 price, but it adds 3-axis manual adjustment in a housing that is easier to tuck under eaves and easier to aim precisely along fence lines, side yards, and rear elevations.[1]
The open-face turret design also avoids a common dome problem: IR reflecting off a dirty cover. In the real world, that matters more than spec sheets admit. On a rear terrace with grill smoke, windblown debris, and seasonal pollen, a turret tends to stay readable at night with less fuss.
Turrets are especially strong on the back half of an estate. We use them where the camera needs to see a wide slice of lawn, patio circulation, or a side path between structures, but where a long bullet body would feel too aggressive on the architecture. The limitation is the same one you can read in the impact rating. IK04 is fine for most protected exterior mounting heights. It is not what we choose for a camera that can be reached from grade or from a porch.
G6 Bullet: Best when the camera needs to declare its job
Bullets are honest. Anyone standing below one knows where it is pointed. That is part of their value. On gates, long drive approaches, secondary entrances, and pole mounts away from the house, a bullet is often the cleanest choice because the body communicates intent and usually gives you the least ambiguous aiming.
The base G6 Bullet has the same core imaging package as the base turret, so choosing bullet over turret is not about getting more sensor. It is about placement and purpose.[1] A bullet is easier to read from a distance, easier to mount off-structure, and easier to dedicate to a lane of travel. When we put a camera on a standalone pole near a drive, it is usually a bullet first, turret second, dome almost never.
This is also where the Pro tier starts to make sense. If the job is not just general awareness but positive identification farther from the house, the G6 Pro Bullet and G6 Pro Turret both step up to the larger 1/1.2-inch sensor, 2.36x optical zoom, and 40 m IR. If the camera may be touched, the G6 Pro Dome gives you the same imaging tier with IK10.[1] The wrong move is to ask a base camera to do a zoom camera's job. If the real requirement is plates or a longer facial read, say that early and spec for it.
How We Lay Out a Luxury Estate
Gate and long approach
The first useful camera on a large property is rarely on the house. CE Pro's April 2026 outdoor reporting noted that camera installation is shifting away from house-mounted positions toward poles, and that tracks with what we see in better estate work.[6] The gate, the first bend in the drive, and the motor court entry all tell different parts of the story. Put the first camera too close to the front door and you have already given away the most important seconds.
At the gate or the drive throat, we usually want a bullet. On a modest distance, a G6 Bullet can do the work. On a longer approach or a wider lane separation, a G6 Pro Bullet is often the better call because you gain optical zoom and a larger sensor without moving to a much bigger industrial body.[1] If the question is really license plates at speed, we stop pretending this is a bullet vs turret debate and start talking about a specialist camera such as AI LPR.
Front door and garage court
This is dome territory more often than clients expect. The front door is where delivery drivers lean in, kids bounce basketballs, and guests stand directly under the lens. The garage court has ladders, landscapers, bicycles, and a lot of casual contact. A G6 Dome or G6 Pro Dome makes sense here because IK10 is worth paying for when the housing is low enough to be reached.[1]
This is also the zone where video should not live in a separate app nobody opens. On residential jobs, key views usually land in a Crestron CP4-R or Crestron Home OS project and surface on a TSW-1080 in the kitchen or mudroom. If after-dark arrival should do more than record, we decide that early and tie the verified event into a Lutron HomeWorks QSX pathway scene. Those are not fancy add-ons. They are the difference between having cameras and actually using them.
Rear terrace, pool, and lawn edge
Rear outdoor living is where turrets earn their keep. A terrace wants broad coverage, clean night performance, and a body that tucks under an eave without feeling militarized. A G6 Turret is often the best balance. It gives you the same base imaging class as the bullet, but the housing is easier to aim across outdoor seating, pool circulation, and side returns without looking heavy on the architecture.[1]
This is also the place where overcoverage creates its own problem. A camera should not watch the entire yard just because it can. It should watch decision points: the path from the side yard to the terrace, the pool gate, the rear service walk, the guest house connection. Good estate coverage is less about total visibility than about covering the few places where movement changes meaning.
Guest house and service zones
Secondary buildings expose lazy planning fast. People spend the main-house budget, then try to stretch one leftover camera body across a guest house door, a generator walk, and the equipment yard. That almost always ends with blind spots.
This is where form factor and infrastructure meet. If the run is exposed, if the building moves independently, or if the trench is long, the camera choice matters less than the pathway feeding it. CE Pro's April 6, 2026 cabling piece made the right point: outdoor cabling should be treated as permanent infrastructure, designed for multiple upgrade cycles, protected against UV and moisture, and given spare conduit while the work is open.[7] We would rather see a slightly better trench and conduit plan than a fancier camera body on a compromised run.
The Platform Behind the Camera Matters More in 2026
Protect software has become part of the buying decision
A camera body is only the lens end of the argument now. The other half is what the platform lets the household do with the footage once it is recorded. On March 17, 2026, Protect 7.0 added resizable live layouts, grouped motion sessions, motion-path thumbnails, AI Key image search, a reworked timeline, Case Manager, and the new 32-input Alarm Hub for wired zones.[2] On May 13, 2026, Protect 7.1 added custom video walls in Site Manager, a retrained smart-detection engine, expanded ONVIF audio and motion support, DC-09 integration support, and the second-generation UniFi NVR platform.[3] The May 21, 2026 Protect 7.1.60 release then added alarm response integration, webhook shortcuts on live camera streams, and more third-party motion and audio support.[4]
That matters on estates because the camera plan is rarely pure greenfield. There is often an existing gate controller, an older intercom, a borrowed third-party camera at a remote entrance, or a sensor layer the client is not ready to rip out. Protect is materially better now at living with that kind of mixed reality than it was a year ago.[3][4]
Cameras work better when they stop pretending to be the whole security system
Ubiquiti's June 4, 2026 physical-security expansion widened the platform again with smoke and CO coverage, environmental monitoring, and the compact dual-4K AI MultiSensor 2.[5] The lesson for estate work is simple: do not ask one camera to do every security job on the property.
At Cave Group, we keep the layers separate on purpose. Cave Guard 24/7 is the sensor and alarm layer for intrusion, fire, smoke, CO, water leak, freeze, and power-loss events. Deep Sentinel is the live video layer when you want an active response to what a camera sees. A G6 Pro Bullet at the front gate may deserve Deep Sentinel coverage. A dome watching a side equipment walk probably does not. Mixing those roles intelligently is better than loading every camera with the same expectation.
Network and power still decide whether the footage exists
The nicest camera on the project is useless if the path back to the recorder is weak. CE Pro's April 15, 2026 outdoor technology coverage reported that three-quarters of integrators now install outdoor access points on these jobs.[6] That is not surprising. Estates now expect strong Wi-Fi at the motor court, the pool, the guest house, and the far lawn edge.
For client devices and control surfaces, an outdoor AP such as the UniFi U7 Pro Outdoor makes sense. It is an IP67 Wi-Fi 7 access point with six spatial streams, AFC-enabled 6 GHz support, and a directional super antenna.[8] But that does not change the rule on perimeter cameras: if conduit is possible, hardwire the camera. Wireless is for mobility and convenience. Perimeter evidence wants PoE, proper surge protection, and a recorder that stays local when the internet does not.
What To Lock Before Drywall
If you are choosing between dome, turret, and bullet on a large residence, these are the decisions worth making before the walls close:
- Decide which views are for identification and which are only for context. A gate camera and a rear lawn overview do not need the same lens or body.
- Mark every camera that can be reached from grade, porch, balcony, or a short ladder. Those are dome candidates first because IK10 is not academic at those heights.[1]
- Separate architecture from security. If the camera must disappear visually but also needs easy night maintenance, a turret under a soffit is often safer than a dome with a dirty bubble.
- Pull spare conduit to the gate, the guest house, the pool house, and any future pole location. Re-trenching later is the expensive part, not buying another camera.[7]
- Decide early which events should surface on Crestron touchpanels and which events should trigger Lutron HomeWorks QSX scenes. If you wait until programming week, those decisions get watered down.
- Choose which cameras deserve live intervention and which belong only in the archival layer. That is the line between Deep Sentinel and a local Protect workflow, not a reason to overbuild every view.
- If a run is long or exposed, spend the money on pathway, conduit, slack, strain relief, and surge protection before spending it on a prettier housing.[7]
The Right Answer Is Usually a Mix
On most estates, the cleanest answer is not dome vs turret vs bullet. It is dome at the touchable entry, turret on the rear living elevations, and bullet at the gate or long approach. Start with what the camera has to survive, what distance it has to cover, and what the household needs to do with the clip once it is captured.
That approach is less dramatic than putting the same camera everywhere. It is also why the footage is still useful six months later, after the pollen, the headlights, the landscapers, and real life have had their say.
