Gateway selection should start with the shape of the property, not the fastest internet plan. In a luxury home or estate, the gateway has to support the access points, cameras, control systems, guest traffic, remote access, and security segmentation that sit behind it.
The useful question is not which UniFi gateway is the biggest. It is which one matches the rack design, inspection load, client count, NVR role, failover expectations, and long-term service plan. Cave Group handles this as part of a complete enterprise networking upgrade, where the gateway is specified alongside switching, Wi-Fi, VLANs, cabling, security devices, and managed support.
Start With Capacity And Role
The UDM SE, UDM Pro Max, and Enterprise Fortress Gateway all live in the UniFi gateway family, but they are not interchangeable trim levels.
The UDM SE is listed by Ubiquiti as a 10G cloud gateway with support for 100+ UniFi devices, 1,000+ clients, 3.5 Gbps IPS routing, and built-in PoE switching. That makes it a compact option when the design benefits from an all-in-one gateway with PoE built in. The caution is architectural: once the property needs larger switching, more access points, heavier camera coverage, or cleaner rack separation, the built-in PoE should not be treated as a substitute for a properly designed access layer.
The UDM Pro Max is also a 10G cloud gateway, but Ubiquiti lists it with 200+ UniFi device support, 2,000+ client support, 5 Gbps IPS routing, and redundant NVR storage. That changes its role. It can suit designs where the gateway should have more headroom than the UDM SE and where onboard NVR redundancy matters, while still staying in a simpler single-gateway architecture.
The Enterprise Fortress Gateway is a different class. Ubiquiti lists the EFG as a 25G cloud gateway with 500+ UniFi device support, 5,000+ client support, 12.5 Gbps IPS routing, and complete high availability. Ubiquiti also notes that Shadow Mode high availability with automatic failover requires UniFi OS 4.0 or later and another EFG. That pairing requirement is important: an EFG conversation should include the rest of the high-availability design, not just the gateway itself.
Match The Gateway To The Property
Choose the UDM SE when the project is intentionally compact: one main rack, moderate UniFi device count, limited gateway inspection demand, and a design where built-in PoE switching is useful rather than constraining. It can be the right fit when the network is scoped tightly and future expansion is not being pushed onto the gateway after the fact.
Choose the UDM Pro Max when the home needs more gateway headroom, higher supported client and UniFi device counts, and redundant NVR storage, but does not require a paired high-availability gateway design. It is a stronger fit than the UDM SE when the rack is already moving toward dedicated switching, broader Wi-Fi coverage, and a more serious UniFi Protect plan.
Choose the EFG when the property is being designed around enterprise-scale capacity and high availability from the start. The published 25G gateway class, 12.5 Gbps IPS routing figure, 500+ UniFi device support, and Shadow Mode pairing requirement point to a different design brief: redundant edge hardware, serious uplink planning, disciplined switching, and a clear expectation for how the network should behave during failure.
Do Not Let The Gateway Hide Weak Design
A larger gateway will not fix poor access point placement, thin uplinks, flat networks, or undocumented cabling. A smaller gateway can perform well when the system behind it is disciplined. The sizing decision should be made with a full inventory of wired devices, wireless clients, cameras, access control, control processors, guest networks, work networks, and outdoor coverage zones.
For Cave Group, that means the gateway is selected after the network topology is understood. The rack, VLAN plan, Wi-Fi heat map, PoE budget, switch uplinks, camera retention needs, and support model all matter. A UniFi Certified Partner should be able to explain not only why a gateway was chosen, but what would make that choice wrong.
The practical rule is simple: size for the job the network will actually do. If built-in PoE and a compact design are enough, the UDM SE may be appropriate. If the rack needs more headroom and redundant NVR storage without a full HA edge, the UDM Pro Max deserves a close look. If the design requires 25G-class edge capacity and paired automatic failover, the EFG belongs in the conversation.
