What Is HomeWorks Illumination?
HomeWorks Illumination was Lutron's flagship whole-home lighting control system from the early 2000s through the mid-2010s. If you built or renovated a luxury home in Manhattan, the Hamptons, Greenwich, or anywhere in the tri-state area during that period, there's a good chance your lighting runs on Illumination.
The system controls every light and shade in your home through a central processor — a single piece of hardware hidden in a utility closet. Your keypads, your scenes, your schedules — everything depends on that processor.
And that's the problem.
Why You Need to Upgrade Now
Lutron officially ended support for HomeWorks Illumination. That means:
- •No replacement processors are manufactured. If yours fails, there is no fix.
- •No firmware updates or security patches since 2015.
- •Your entire programming is stored locally on the processor. If it dies, every scene, every schedule, every keypad assignment is gone.
- •A single power surge can destroy the processor and take your entire lighting system offline.
- •No app control, no voice integration, no remote access.
We've seen it happen — a homeowner in Manhattan lost their entire lighting system after a power event. No backup, no recovery, no replacement parts available. The only option was a full system replacement under emergency conditions. Don't let that be you.

What Is HomeWorks QSX?
HomeWorks QSX is Lutron's current flagship platform — the direct successor to Illumination, designed for the next 20 years. It delivers everything Illumination couldn't:
- •Cloud-backed programming — your scenes and schedules are automatically backed up. If hardware needs replacement, programming restores instantly.
- •Full app control — the Lutron app gives you control of every light and shade from your phone, anywhere in the world.
- •Voice control — native integration with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.
- •Ketra tunable white lighting — the world's most advanced color-tuning technology, exclusive to Lutron.
- •Up to 10,000 zones — compared to Illumination's 64-zone limit.
- •Regular firmware updates — new features and security improvements delivered automatically.
What Does the Upgrade Look Like?
This is not a rip-and-replace. A well-planned HomeWorks QSX upgrade reuses your existing wiring, preserves your shade motors, and updates only the components that need replacing. Here's the typical process:
Remote Assessment
We review your current system over a video call. You walk us through your keypads, we identify every zone, and we map the upgrade plan.
Design & Engineering
Our Lutron-certified engineers design the QSX layout, maximizing existing wiring. Every scene and schedule is mapped to the new platform before a single wire is touched.
Installation
3-5 days on-site. Most work happens in electrical panels, not your living spaces. Keypads are updated, shade motors re-paired, scenes tested room by room.
Training & Support
We walk you through the Lutron app, voice commands, and new keypad functions. Ongoing remote support is included — firmware updates, scene adjustments, troubleshooting.
Assessment to activation: typically 6-8 weeks. Emergency upgrades are available for systems that have already failed.

New keypad options: Palladiom Glass, Alisse, and Avienna — available in dozens of finishes.
What Can Be Reused?
One of the biggest advantages of the QSX upgrade is that Lutron designed it to leverage your existing infrastructure. A well-planned upgrade doesn't mean starting from scratch:
- •Existing low-voltage wiring is reused in most cases — no opening walls, no repainting.
- •Shade motors are typically compatible and only need re-pairing to the new processor.
- •Dimming modules are replaced with new QSX modules that fit existing enclosures.
- •The processor is swapped — this is the core of the upgrade.
- •Keypads can be kept or upgraded to the new Palladiom, Alisse, or Avienna collections.
- •Lutron offers specific transition paths from Illumination to QSX that minimize cost and disruption.
Every system is different. We assess your specific setup and design an upgrade path that maximizes reuse and minimizes disruption. Contact us for a free assessment.
What About My Crestron or Savant System?
If your home has a Crestron or Savant automation system alongside Lutron lighting, the upgrade is seamless. HomeWorks QSX integrates natively with both platforms. Your automation system stays exactly as it is — only the lighting backend upgrades.
This is a key advantage of working with Cave Group. Unlike most Lutron-only dealers, we're certified in Crestron, Lutron, and Savant — so we handle the entire integration, not just the lighting side.
Also Upgrading: RadioRA 2 and Hotel Systems
HomeWorks Illumination isn't the only Lutron platform reaching end of life. We also upgrade:
- •RadioRA 2 → RadioRA 3 — modern app control, voice assistants, enhanced reliability.
- •Legacy hotel systems → myRoom XC — Lutron's hospitality platform with PMS integration and cloud management.
- •Commercial systems → Athena — scalable lighting control with DALI, DMX, and BMS integration.
Where We Work
Cave Group serves luxury homeowners, hotels, and commercial properties across the New York metro area, Hamptons, Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida, and international properties in Europe. We've been designing and installing Lutron systems since 2011.
