Know when distributed video is overkill

Some houses want exactly one good theater, a few straightforward smart TVs, and no appetite for deeper orchestration. The trick is not ideological purity. It is discipline.
The Part People Miss: Screens Are a Lighting Job
A television is easy to love on a reflected ceiling plan and easy to hate at four in the afternoon. Most bad TV placements are not bad because the screen was cheap. They are bad because nobody designed the room around glare, reflections, and what the wall looks like when the display is off.
TV selection is architectural before it is technical

The screen wall and the daylight wall are usually the same argument wearing different clothes. Primary video destinations should be wired. The hard rule is simple: do not make Wi-Fi the primary transport for the rooms that people care about. Wireless is excellent for control and roaming. It is not where you want your most expensive moving video problems to live.
Where UniFi actually helps
Ubiquiti's current releases make that layering easier. The new U7 Mesh brings Wi-Fi 7 and an antenna design that Ubiquiti says can extend reach up to three times farther in mesh deployments [4]. UniFi Network 10.4 added native eBGP, WireGuard over IPv6, topology history, and better infrastructure visibility [5]. None of that means a terrace TV should depend on mesh for its main video feed. It means the estate can have stronger control coverage and a cleaner support path without crowding the AV transport layer.
In Cave Group's stack, that usually becomes a layered network design: a UniFi core sized for the estate, Pro XG switching where the backbone justifies it, and a Peplink multi-WAN edge when continuity matters. Good TV distribution lives happily on that kind of network. Bad TV distribution expects the network to improvise.
When a Video Wall Is the Right Answer
Not every big wall wants a television, and not every television wants to become a wall. That distinction is getting easier to miss because the residential market is moving fast.
Great room bragging rights and real viewing distance
Residential Systems' February 2026 guidance on video walls is useful because it forces the conversation into numbers. Their current rule of thumb puts 0.7-0.9mm pixel pitch in premium theaters with 6-10 foot viewing distances, and 1.2-1.5mm in great rooms or multipurpose spaces where people sit 10-15 feet back [2]. This is where the rest of the estate stack has to pull its weight. Sonance Invisible Series or James Loudspeaker can help in rooms that demand concealment. StormAudio and Trinnov belong in rooms that need serious processing. Wisdom Audio, L-Acoustics, or a full theater package may belong where film performance matters more than invisibility.
Source Quality Still Sets the Ceiling
A distributed system can only look as good as the source it is asked to move. People spend a lot of time arguing about screens and not enough time asking what content those screens are supposed to justify.
Give the best source to the best room
Kaleidescape's June 2026 Strato K launch is a good reminder. The new player adds 8K playback and a 4K Cinematic mode with up to 4:4:4 chroma and higher bitrates [7]. That is meaningful in the room built for serious watching. It is not a reason to put the same source budget behind a mudroom TV.
On estates, the smart move is usually tiered. Put the reference source where reference viewing happens. Let the casual rooms share the right rack sources for sports, news, cameras, and everyday television. Use local apps where personalization matters more than central management.
The best estates are usually hybrid
The houses that age well are almost never purely centralized or purely local. They are hybrid by design. Shared sources are centralized because service, consistency, and scene control improve. Commodity streaming stays local where app churn and personal logins would otherwise waste everyone's time. Control stays unified. Infrastructure stays honest.

What To Lock Before Drywall
If this conversation happens after millwork shop drawings are approved, the system is already harder than it needed to be. These are the items worth settling early:
